What to say:

When the Wind Blows

When strong wind blew, the Prophet SAW would recite:

اللَّهمَّ إنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ خَيْرِ مَا أُُرْسِلَتْ بِهِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أُرْسِلَتْ بِهِ

Read: ‘Allahumma innee as-‘aluka min khayri maa ursilat bihee, wa a’udhu bika min sharri maa ursilat bihee.’

Meaning: “O Allah, I ask you of the goodness with which it (the wind) has been sent, and I seek Your refuge from the harm with which it has been sent (the wind)”.
(Al-Bukhari in Adab Al-Mufrad)

Reminder:

Do not curse the winds!

Be wary, and do not curse the winds as it is mentioned in the Beloved’s words:

“The wind is from the mercy of Allah. It brings mercy and brings punishment. When you see it, do not curse it. Ask Allah Ta’ala for it’s good and seek refuge in Allah for it’s evil.”

What to say:

When there is Thunder

The Prophet SAW used to read this:

“سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي يُسَبِّحُ الرَّعْدُ بِحَمْدِهِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ مِنْ خِيفَتِهِ” ثُمَّ يَقُولُ: “إِنَّ هَذَا لَوَعِيدٌ شَدِيدٌ لِأَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ”

Read: “Subhanalladzi Yusabbihur Ra’du Bi Hamdihi Wal Malaa’ikatu Min Kheefatihi”, Thumma Yaquul: “Inna Hadza La Wa’eedun Shadeedun Li Ahlil Ardh”

Meaning: “Glory be to Allah whom the thunder glorifies with His praise and the angels from the fear of Him.”

And then he says: “Verily, this is a harsh reminder for the earthlings”.
(Al-Bukhari in Adab Al-Mufrad)

What to say:

When it is Raining

When it rained the powerful yet simple du’a to read is, as the Prophet SAW did so:

اللَّهُمَّ صَيِّبًا نَافِعًا

Read: Allahumma soyyiban naafi’an

Meaning: O Allah, make it a beneficial rain.
(Sahih Bukhari)

Perhaps, everytime we see the rain, we should make a habit of asking for anything we desire as it is mentioned by the Prophet SAW:

“Two (du‘as) are not rejected: du‘a at the time of the call to prayer and du‘a at the time of rain.”
(Al-Hakim in his Mustadrak)

What to say:

When Rain has Ended

When the rain ends, the Prophet SAW used to say:

مُطِرْنَا بِفَضْلِ اللـهِ ورَحْمَتِهِ

Read: Mutirna Bi Fadhlillah Wa Rahmatihi

Meaning: It has rained by the bounty of Allah and His mercy
(Sahih Bukhari)

The Prophet ﷺ used to:

Touch the Rain!

From the hadith of Anas, he said:

It rained upon us as we were with the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) unveiled his garment (from a part of his body) until the rain fell on him. We said: Messenger of Allah, why did you do this? He said: Because it (the rainfall) has just come from the Exalted Lord.
(Muslim)

Scholars note that this may be done by exposing part of the skin even if it were a little, and the aurah should not be exposed in the process. This should also be done in the case of harmless rain and it is forbidden to do so when the rain causes harm.

Remembering Allah SWT

In Nature’s Simple Wonders: The Rain

In Surah An-Nur verse 43, Allah SWT says:

أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُزْجِى سَحَابًۭا ثُمَّ يُؤَلِّفُ بَيْنَهُۥ ثُمَّ يَجْعَلُهُۥ رُكَامًۭا فَتَرَى ٱلْوَدْقَ يَخْرُجُ مِنْ خِلَـٰلِهِۦ وَيُنَزِّلُ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مِن جِبَالٍۢ فِيهَا مِنۢ بَرَدٍۢ فَيُصِيبُ بِهِۦ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَصْرِفُهُۥ عَن مَّن يَشَآءُ ۖ يَكَادُ سَنَا بَرْقِهِۦ يَذْهَبُ بِٱلْأَبْصَـٰرِ

Do you not see that Allah gently drives the clouds, then joins them together, piling them up into masses, from which you see raindrops come forth? And He sends down from the sky mountains of clouds loaded with hail, pouring it on whoever He wills and averting it from whoever He wills. The flash of the clouds’ lightning nearly takes away eyesight.

So ponder:

How does the Rain look like to you now?

Let us see the rain as a means to remember Allah SWT, His Majesty and Mercy in providing sustenance and life on this Earth, through the creation of rain. This is what Zikr (remembrance of Allah) looks like, to remember Him in all of the small pleasures and huge gifts He presents to us.
