The Islamic Way of improving the memory

Learning is not just acquiring knowledge; it is a journey of self-discovery, growth, and profound gratitude towards Allah. It is about internalizing our experiences, the late nights fueled by determination, the countless battles fought against inner resistance, and the immense satisfaction of finally reaching our goals.

Through this journey, we experience a sense of hope, reliance upon Allah SWT (tawakkul), and constant gratitude towards Allah (syukr) for every step along the way. The more we learn, the more we realize the vastness of knowledge and are humbled by Allah’s magnificence. This, in essence, is the beauty of learning: it fosters humility and incites awe and reverence for Allah’s boundless wisdom.

The ability to retain knowledge and memory is intricately linked to how we care for Allah’s gift of the intellect. While reviewing notes can help with recalling information, preserving knowledge goes beyond mere memorization and revision. It is a holistic experience that demands our full engagement, encompassing both our physical and spiritual states.

So as a student of knowledge, how should one improve the memory? Here are a few ways to improve our memory as students of knowledge:

1) Realise that knowledge is a gift from Allah.

Like any gift, we must take care of it. As the Quran reminds us:

“Those gifted with knowledge,” (Surah Saba’ Ayat 6)

*Meaning: what they have comprehended by themselves, but Allah, the Exalted, has bestowed it upon them.

This verse emphasizes that our knowledge is ultimately a blessing bestowed by Allah. It is not something to be proud of, rather, it is a catalyst for serving others and deepening our connection with Him.

2) It is incumbent upon man to turn to Allah in seeking knowledge.

Prayer and supplication are powerful tools for seeking guidance and assistance from Allah. Asking for His help in strengthening your memory is a humbling act of submission and faith. Dua’ can open doors of understanding, enhance your ability to learn, and strengthen your resolve to achieve your goals in seeking knowledge.

“Those gifted with knowledge clearly see that what has been revealed to you from your Lord O Prophet is the truth, and that it guides to the Path of the Almighty, the Praiseworthy.”

(Surah Saba’ Ayat 6)

This verse highlights the importance of seeking knowledge from Allah, recognizing that true understanding and guidance come only from Him.

Prayer and supplication (dua) are powerful tools in this quest for knowledge. By humbly seeking Allah’s assistance in strengthening our memory, we open doors of understanding and enhance our ability to learn and grow.

3) Consume halal food.

Islam emphasizes the importance of consuming halal food – food that is lawful and good. It is not just about diet; it is about recognizing the profound connection between what we eat and our cognitive function.

Additionally, the Qur’an further emphasizes on the consuming of not only halal, but toyyiban food, which is noted in the Qur’an as a blessing from Allah SWT as mentioned:

وَكُلُواْ مِمَّا رَزَقَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ حَلَٰلٗا طَيِّبٗاۚ وَٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ ٱلَّذِيٓ أَنتُم بِهِۦ مُؤۡمِنُونَ

And eat of what Allah has provided for you [which is] lawful and good. And fear Allah, in whom you are believers.

(Surah Al-Maidah Ayat 88)

The more conscious we are of our food, the easier it becomes to recognise what is good and what is harmful for the memory. There are plenty of foods that may be considered to be permissible, but the term halalan toyyiban extends to choosing food that is nutritious and energy-providing.

This is why the diet of the Prophet SAW may become an exemplar for students of knowledge to emulate, as he (the most beloved SAW) was known to be one of the healthiest of man despite the little that he had. We can also reap lessons from the scholars, who with their astounding memory, made conscious efforts to preserve their health by consuming toyyiban food.

Imagine your brain as a garden. The seeds you sow (the food you eat) determine the quality of the fruits you harvest (your mental clarity and memory). By choosing halal, wholesome foods, you nourish your brain with the essential nutrients it needs to thrive. This translates into improved memory function, enhanced focus, and a clearer mind.

4) Focus Your Mind, Sharpen Your Memory.

Allah repeatedly reminds us to focus and concentrate. A wandering mind is like a leaky bucket – information pours in but quickly slips away. Allah SWT mentions:

“And when the Qur’an is recited, listen to it and be silent so that you may receive mercy.”

(Surah Al-Maidah Ayat 204)

Think of focusing your mind like training a spotlight. When you direct your attention to the information you want to remember, you create a clear pathway for it to be encoded and stored in your brain. This focused attention allows you to process information more efficiently, reduces distractions, and ultimately, improves your recollection.

Conclusion

Memory; it is the cornerstone of learning, knowledge, and personal growth. It allows us to store experiences, recall information, and navigate the complexities of life. As memory was was given by Allah, it is a reminder that for us that it is closely linked to knowledge, which is in itself a gift from God, and it should be respected and used wisely.
