Signs Allah loves His Servants (in the Qur’an, Sunnah & Seerah)

Among the countless blessings a believer can hope for, there is none greater than being loved by Allah. Wealth can be lost, health can fade, and the love of people can change, but the love of Allah is a treasure that remains in this life and accompanies a person into the next. It is for this reason that one of the most beautiful supplications taught to us through the Prophets is the heartfelt du’a of Prophet Daud (May peace be upon him):

اللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ حُبَّكَ، وَحُبَّ مَنْ يُحِبُّكَ، وَالعَمَلَ الَّذِي يُبَلِّغُنِي حُبَّكَ، اللّٰهُمَّ اجْعَلْ حُبَّكَ أَحَبَّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ نَفْسِي وَأَهْلِي، وَمِنَ المَاءِ البَارِدِ

“O Allah, indeed, I ask You for Your love and the love of those who love You, and for the action that will cause me to attain Your love. O Allah, make Your love more beloved to me than myself, my family, and cold water.”

(Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 3490)

At the heart of every believer’s journey is a beautiful truth that our love for Allah is itself a gift from Allah. A heart that turns to Him, longs for Him, and finds peace in His remembrance has already been touched by His mercy and guidance. How could a servant sincerely love Allah if Allah had not first opened their heart to know Him, remember Him, and seek Him?

Knowing that Allah loves you means experiencing His divine affection— His mahabbah. This is not merely an abstract concept or an emotional feeling, but it is a transformative relationship between the Creator and His servant that manifests in countless ways such as tranquility in the heart during times of uncertainty, guidance when faced with difficult choices, strength during trials, and a persistent desire to seek what pleases Allah even when the soul struggles.

Yet many believers quietly wonder: Does Allah love me? Am I among those whom He has chosen for His mercy and closeness? While no one can claim with certainty their standing before Allah, the Qur’an and Sunnah provide signs that indicate His love for His servant. These signs are not meant to make us complacent, but to fill our hearts with hope, gratitude, and a renewed determination to draw nearer to Him.

1) You have sincere love towards those Allah loves

One of the signs that Allah loves you is that He places love in your heart for His beloved servants. A person naturally gravitates toward what they love and admires those who reflect the qualities they aspire to possess. When your heart feels drawn to the righteous, the pious, and those who remind you of Allah, this is a blessing that should not be taken lightly.

In a Hadith Qudsi, it is mentioned that:

“إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ قَالَ: مَنْ عَادَى لِي وَلِيًّا، فَقَدْ آذَنْتُهُ بِالْحَرْبِ”

“Allah (Mighty and Sublime be He) said: Whosoever shows enmity to a devoted servant of Mine, I shall declare war against him.”

(Hadith 25, 40 Hadith Qudsi)

If Allah is so protective of His awliya‘ (beloved and devoted servants), then loving them, honouring them, and keeping their company are among the means of drawing closer to Him. The awliya’ of Allah are not necessarily people of fame or status, but they are those whose hearts are devoted to Allah, and whose lives are characterised by sincerity, taqwa and the Muhammadan akhlaq.

Among those whom Allah loves are the Prophets, the Companions, the martyrs (shuhada’), the righteous scholars, and the pious believers from every generation. When you find yourself loving such people— not for worldly benefit, but because of their faith, character, and closeness to Allah— it is a sign that your heart is aligned with what Allah loves.

Pay attention to who inspires you, whose company nourishes your soul, and whose example encourages you to become a better servant of Allah. Be intentional about the company you keep. Surround yourself with people who remind you of Allah and inspire you toward goodness. Seek gatherings that bring you closer to Him and engage in deeds that are beloved to Him. Conversely, distance yourself from influences and relationships that distract you from your Creator or become a veil (hijab) between your heart and Allah. If your heart finds joy in the remembrance of the righteous and yearns to follow in their footsteps, this may be one of the subtle signs that Allah is nurturing His love within you.

2) Acceptance and Love Among People

Earlier, we discussed how loving the righteous is a sign of Allah’s love. The opposite is also true in many cases: when righteous people genuinely love, respect, and make du’a for you because of your character and devotion to Allah. This is especially true when their affection is based not on worldly benefits, wealth, or influence, but on seeing qualities that are beloved to Allah.

One of the signs that Allah loves a servant is that He places acceptance for them in the hearts of others. This does not necessarily mean popularity, fame, or universal approval but rather, it means that Allah causes sincere believers and righteous people to feel love, respect, and affection toward that person because of their faith, character, and sincerity. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“When Allah loves a slave, He calls Jibril and says: ‘I love so-and-so; so love him.’ Then Jibril loves him. After that, he (Jibril) announces to the inhabitants of the heavens that Allah loves so-and-so; so love him. Then the inhabitants of the heavens love him, and acceptance is established for him on earth.”

(Riyad as-Salihin 387)

This hadith reveals a beautiful chain of divine love. It begins with Allah’s love, followed by the love of Jibril, then the love of the angels, and finally acceptance among the people of the earth. The affection that righteous people have for a servant may therefore be more than mere human admiration— it may be a reflection of Allah’s love for that individual.

Of course, this does not mean that every person will like you. Even the Prophets faced criticism, opposition, and hostility despite being the most beloved people to Allah. The sign lies in the acceptance that Allah places in the hearts of good people— the people of kheyr (goodness). Ultimately, true acceptance is a gift from Allah. When Allah loves a servant, He causes the heavens to know their name before causing the earth to know it. And what greater honour can there be than to be loved by Allah, loved by the angels, and remembered with affection by the people of kheyr?

3) Allah Makes Acts of Worship and Voluntary (Nawafil) Deeds Beloved and Consistent for You

One of the subtle yet beautiful signs that Allah loves a servant is that He makes acts of worship easy, beloved, and consistent for them. In a famous Hadith Qudsi, Allah says:

“وَمَا تَقَرَّبَ إِلَيَّ عَبْدِي بِشَيْءٍ أَحَبَّ إِلَيَّ مِمَّا افْتَرَضْتُ عَلَيْهِ، وَمَا يَزَالُ عَبْدِي يَتَقَرَّبُ إِلَيَّ بِالنَّوَافِلِ حَتَّى أُحِبَّهُ”

“My servant does not draw closer to Me with anything more beloved to Me than the obligatory duties. And My servant continues to draw near to Me with voluntary deeds until I love him.”

(Hadith 25, 40 Hadith Qudsi)

This hadith reveals a profound pathway to Allah’s love. The journey begins with safeguarding the obligations that Allah has prescribed such as our prayers, fasting, and zakat, but it does not end there. What is especially noteworthy is that Allah does not mention occasional acts of devotion, but continuous ones. The hadith says, “My servant continues to draw near to Me,” highlighting the importance of consistency. Allah loves deeds that are sustained, even if they appear small in the eyes of people. A few units of tahajjud prayed regularly, a daily portion of Qur’an, a habit of morning and evening adhkar, or a small amount of charity given consistently may be more beloved to Allah than grand acts that are performed only sporadically.

This principle is echoed in a hadith narrated by Sayyidatina Aisyah (May Allah be pleased with her), in which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“سَدِّدُوا وَقَارِبُوا، وَاعْلَمُوا أَنْ لَنْ يُدْخِلَ أَحَدَكُمْ عَمَلُهُ الْجَنَّةَ، وَأَنَّ أَحَبَّ الأَعْمَالِ أَدْوَمُهَا إِلَى اللَّهِ، وَإِنْ قَلَّ ‏”‏

“Do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately and know that your deeds will not make you enter Paradise, and that the most beloved deed to Allah is the most regular and constant even if it were little.”

(Sahih Al-Bukhari 6464)

This hadith teaches us that Allah is not looking for unsustainable bursts of worship that quickly fade away. Rather, He loves a servant who consistently turns to Him day after day, even through periods of weakness, busyness, and spiritual fluctuation. The ability to remain steadfast and consistently perform nawafil is not simply a result of personal discipline, but it is a gift and a form of divine tawfiq (guidance). If Allah repeatedly opens doors for you to worship Him, facilitates good deeds for you, and places sweetness in acts of devotion, then cherish that blessing. It may be one of the signs that Allah is drawing you nearer and nurturing His love for you.

4) Being Tested and Seeing the Test as a Blessing

One of the most misunderstood signs of Allah’s love is being tested. Many people assume that hardships, delays, losses, and difficulties are signs of Allah’s displeasure. Yet the Qur’an and Sunnah repeatedly teach us that trials can be among the greatest manifestations of Allah’s care for a servant. Allah says in verse 9 of Surah Ash-Shams:

قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّىٰهَا

“Successful indeed is the one who purifies their soul”

The path to purification is rarely easy. Just as gold is refined through fire, the believer’s heart is purified through trials. Hardships expose our weaknesses, humble our egos, deepen our reliance upon Allah, and detach us from the illusion that this world can ever fully satisfy us. What is even more telling is not merely the presence of a trial, but how Allah enables you to respond to it. If a hardship causes you to turn toward Allah rather than away from Him, if it increases your du’a instead of your despair, and if it softens your heart rather than hardens it, then the trial itself may be a hidden gift from your Lord.

The lives of the Prophets provide the greatest examples of this reality. Those whom Allah loved most were often those who endured the most severe tests. The Ulul Azmi— the Prophets of exceptional resolve— such as Prophet Nuh, Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Musa (May peace be upon them all) were distinguished not by lives of ease, but by extraordinary patience, steadfastness, and trust in Allah through immense trials.

This does not mean a believer should seek hardship or pretend that pain does not hurt. Even the Prophets grieved, cried, and felt sorrow. However, they understood that every trial carried wisdom. Perhaps one of the clearest signs of Allah’s love is not that your life becomes easier, but that through every difficulty, your heart becomes closer to Him. After all, a trial that brings you nearer to Allah is often a greater blessing than a comfort that causes you to forget Him.

5) You Love to Meet Allah

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever loves to meet Allah, Allah loves to meet him, and he who dislikes to meet Allah, Allah abhors to meet him.”

(Sahih Muslim 2684a)

When Sayyidatina Aisha heard this, she asked whether it referred to people’s natural fear and dislike of death. The Prophet ﷺ clarified that this was not its meaning. Rather, when a believer is given glad tidings of Allah’s pleasure at the moment of death, they eagerly look forward to meeting their Lord, and Allah loves to meet them in return. This teaches us that loving to meet Allah does not mean wishing for death or neglecting our responsibilities in this world. Instead, it reflects the condition of a heart that has grown attached to Allah through worship, and remembrance.

A believer who spends their life striving to know Allah, obey Him, and seek His pleasure gradually develops a deep longing for His nearness and the ultimate meeting with Him. This longing often manifests itself long before a person’s final moments. You may find a growing sense of peace and tranquility in prayer.

Another sign is a deep attachment to the Qur’an. Some of the righteous would say that one of the signs that Allah intends good for a servant is that He opens the Qur’an for them. Allah grants them the ability to recite it consistently, reflect upon its meanings, and allow its teachings to transform their character. A heart that continually returns to the Qur’an is a heart being invited closer to its Creator.

If you find yourself increasingly at peace in prayer, comforted by remembrance, and drawn to the Qur’an, these may be subtle signs that Allah is cultivating love for Him within your heart. And when a servant spends their life seeking Allah, it is only natural that they eventually long for the moment when they will finally meet the One they have spent their life striving to know, worship, and love.

6) Divine Assistance and Guidance

One of the signs that Allah loves a servant is that He grants them special guidance, protection, and assistance in their daily life. This does not mean that the servant becomes free from mistakes or difficulties, but rather, Allah helps them navigate life in a way that draws them closer to Him and protects them from what displeases Him. In a famous Hadith Qudsi, Allah says:

“فَإِذَا أَحْبَبْتُهُ، كُنْتُ سَمْعَهُ الَّذِي يَسْمَعُ بِهِ، وَبَصَرَهُ الَّذِي يُبْصِرُ بِهِ، وَيَدَهُ الَّتِي يَبْطِشُ بِهَا، وَرِجْلَهُ الَّتِي يَمْشِي بِهَا”

“When I love him I am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes and his foot with which he walks”

(Hadith 25, 40 Hadith Qudsi)

Allah guides the servant’s hearing toward that which is beneficial and away from that which is harmful. He guides their sight away from what is forbidden and toward what increases faith. He blesses their actions, directs their efforts toward goodness, and guides their steps along paths that lead to His pleasure.

As a result, the servant begins to experience a heightened awareness of Allah in their daily life. They become more sensitive to sin, more conscious of their choices, and more inclined toward what is pleasing to Allah. They may find themselves instinctively avoiding situations that distance them from their Lord and gravitating toward opportunities for goodness and worship.

This divine assistance is one of the greatest gifts a believer can receive. Many people know what is right, yet struggle to act upon it. When Allah loves a servant, He not only shows them the right path but grants them the strength, wisdom, and tawfiq (guidance)  to walk it. If you find that Allah continually guides you back to what is good, protects you from harms you may not even perceive, and opens doors for righteous actions while closing doors to sin, then cherish that blessing. It may be one of the signs that Allah is drawing you nearer through His love.

A Final Reflection

In the end, love cannot be cultivated in absence. Just as any meaningful relationship requires time, attention, and care, our relationship with Allah grows through intentional effort and sincere presence. If we desire Allah’s love, we must seek the means that bring us closer to Him: learning about His beautiful Names and Attributes, reflecting upon the stories and wisdom of the Qur’an, and striving to follow the example of Rasulullah ﷺ in both our outward actions and inward character.

Allah does not expect perfection from us. Rather, He loves ihsan— that we strive to worship Him with excellence and sincerity, nurturing the quality of our hearts and the intention behind our actions.

Spend time alone with your Lord.

Pour your heart out to Him in moments when no one else is listening. Speak to Him about your fears, hopes, mistakes, and dreams.

Remember Him through dhikr, seek His forgiveness often, and allow yourself to be vulnerable before Him.

Hearts do not transform overnight. Love grows gradually, through consistency rather than intensity. Small acts performed regularly can, by Allah’s permission, create profound shifts and realignments within the heart.

The signs of Allah’s love are not meant to make us assume we have arrived; they are invitations to draw even closer. Continue walking toward Him with sincerity, for whoever takes a step toward Allah will find that Allah’s mercy and generosity are far greater than anything they could ever imagine. Just as how Allah mentioned in a Hadith Qudsi:

“وَإِنْ أَتَانِي يَمْشِي أَتَيْتُهُ هَرْوَلَةً ‏”

“And if he (my servant) comes to Me walking, I go to him running.”

(Sahih Al-Bukhari 7405)
